Creating concept, business model and joint eCommerce solution for the three biggest museums in Denmark.< Back to Projects | Next project >
Museumsbutik (Museum shop) was a co-operative eCommerce solution for major museums in Denmark. Setting up an eCcommerce solution is a costly and time consuming process, making an online store rather complicated. This posed a big problem especially to a number of Museums in Denmark, who had an international reputation, but without the ability to meet international (nor national) customer demand online. Hans Christian Andersen Museum, Viking Ship Museum and Thorvaldsen Museum were among those for whom I created solutions. A simple concept to solved the complex problem: co-operative eCommerce clearinghouse. Concept In collaboration with SeCom ApS, who provided the legal infrastructure, I set up a simple eCommerce solution which could accommodate several outlets and different skins using the same engine, as an extension to the regular website. This enabled us to offer the e-commerce service to any number of museums, who only had to ship the order once we processed the transaction and forwarded order information, in exchange for 10% of the total money transaction. Operation Viking Ship Museum was the first museum to adapt the solution, and shortly after the Hans Christian Andersen Museum joined followed by Thorvaldsen Museum. Design Museum Danmark, who's website I was also redesigning at the time, wanted an online store, that could be integrated with the database of artifacts they were building and this began to push against the boundaries of the concept. Termination Our solution evolved and became the proof of concept that was needed for the museums themselves to establish e-commerce solutions, which as a side effect lead to many interesting projects for other museums in Denmark; Hirschsprungske Samling, Struer Museum, B&O Museum og Golden Days. OUTCOME: The business was sustainable for several years - serving the top-10 most prominent museums in Denmark. SKILLS IN ACTION:
